Atiku Abubakar Resigns From PDP, Cites Shift From Party’s Founding Ideals
Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing a departure from the party’s founding principles as the reason for his decision.
In a resignation letter dated July 14 and made public on Wednesday, Atiku stated that the PDP no longer aligns with the ideals on which it was established.
“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” the letter reads.
Atiku expressed deep gratitude for his time in the party, noting that serving two terms as Vice President and twice being its presidential candidate were defining moments in his political career.
“As a founding member of this great party, making this decision is heartbreaking,” he wrote. “However, the current direction of the PDP is no longer in line with the core values we once stood for. I am left with no choice but to step away due to these irreconcilable differences.”
He also conveyed his appreciation to the party’s leadership and supporters for their longstanding support, and wished them well moving forward.
Following his resignation, all local government and ward chairmen from Jada Local Government Area in Adamawa State—Atiku’s home base—also announced their departure from the party.
There are strong indications that the former vice president may be on his way to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), although no official confirmation has been made.
