A high-level delegation from the European Union (EU) and Search for Common Ground recently visited the Plateau State Government to explore stronger partnerships in peacebuilding, youth engagement, and sustainable development.
The delegation, led by Gift Omoniwa, Acting Country Director of Search for Common Ground, focused on reviewing the impact of the IRENEW project—an EU-funded initiative aimed at promoting interfaith harmony and meaningful youth participation across all 17 Local Government Areas of Plateau State.
One of the key outcomes of the project is the establishment of the Plateau State Youth Interfaith Forum (PYIF), created in collaboration with the Plateau State Peacebuilding Agency. PYIF provides a platform for young people from diverse religious backgrounds to work together in fostering dialogue, understanding, and community peace.
The delegation was warmly received by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Rt. Hon. Joyce Ramnap, who expressed appreciation for the EU’s support and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to peacebuilding under Governor Caleb Mutfwang. She highlighted ongoing initiatives such as the Inter-Religious Council, Plateau State Peacebuilding Agency, and Operation Rainbow as crucial to maintaining peace and stability in the state.
Speaking on behalf of the EU, Mr. Ruben Alba, the delegation’s team lead, reiterated the EU’s interest in deepening collaboration with Plateau State, particularly in building early conflict response systems. He also pointed to broader opportunities for EU support in sectors like agriculture, ICT, and infrastructure development. He was accompanied by Winifred Achu, EU Programme Manager, and other senior officials from Search for Common Ground.
The meeting also included key members of the Plateau State Executive Council, including Commissioners for Commerce, Housing, Works, and Science & Technology, highlighting the state’s multi-sectoral approach to development.
This visit marks a significant step forward in Plateau’s efforts to build lasting peace, empower young people, and attract international partnerships for inclusive growth.
