Governor Mutfwang Unveils Mass Housing Plan To Tackle Soaring Rents In Plateau
Governor Caleb Mutfwang has announced that the Plateau State Government will soon launch mass housing projects aimed at easing the burden of high rent and addressing the growing housing deficit across the state.
Speaking to journalists in Jos on Tuesday, the governor described the current rental situation as “worrying,” particularly for civil servants and low-income residents who struggle to find affordable accommodation in the state capital and other urban areas.
“We are stepping up our investments in the housing sector. This is a critical area for us,” Mutfwang said, adding that the initiative is part of a broader strategy to reduce pressure on the already overstretched housing supply.
He disclosed that the government has begun clearing land in preparation for construction, with building work expected to commence in the coming months.
The governor also revealed ongoing discussions with the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) and private sector partners to collaborate on the project.
“We’re in active talks with the FHA and other investors to support this initiative,” he noted.
In a major step forward, Mutfwang confirmed that the state government has completed payments for land earmarked for housing developments specifically targeted at civil servants.
“I’m pleased to report that we’ve finalized land payments for the construction of homes for our workers,” he said.
While acknowledging the government’s limited authority over rent control, the governor expressed confidence that expanding housing availability would help curb exploitative practices by landlords.
He emphasized that beyond reducing the housing burden, the mass housing project is expected to generate employment opportunities and stimulate economic activity throughout Plateau State.
