Governor Mutfwang Launches Nigeria Learning Passport To Advance Digital Education In Plateau State
In a bold step towards revolutionizing education in Plateau State, the Executive Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has officially launched the Nigeria Learning Passport (NLP) — a cutting-edge e-learning platform designed to enhance access to quality education and digital literacy for students across the state.
The launch event was held on Friday, August 15, 2025, at the Twin Theater, Government House, Little Rayfield, Jos. Governor Mutfwang reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to bridging the digital divide, especially in rural areas, ensuring every child is equipped to thrive in a technology-driven world.
“We have a duty to bridge the gap between generations. Those of us born before the digital era must ensure our children are prepared for the realities of today’s world,” he stated. He expressed gratitude to UNICEF, TECNO Mobile, Airtel, and other partners for supporting the initiative, which he described as “a leap forward for public education in Plateau.”
The Governor tasked the Ministry of Education with developing a strategic plan for full digital integration at all levels of education within the next two to three years. He also highlighted potential collaborations with institutions such as Neva University—an online learning platform founded by a Plateau indigene—to accelerate this digital transformation.
Referencing the successful pilot at Government Secondary School, Kuru, he pledged to scale the project to all communities across the state. Acknowledging the limited number of Computer-Based Test (CBT) centers outside Jos, the Governor announced ongoing collaborations with the Federal Ministry of Communications and telecom providers—Airtel, MTN, and Etisalat—to expand broadband infrastructure through fibre optic installations.
Speaking on behalf of UNICEF Bauchi Office’s Chief Field Officer, Dr. Nazhat Rafique, Mr. Abdulrahaman Ibrahim Ado stated that the NLP platform is tailored to improve learning outcomes and reduce the number of out-of-school children. “With over two million children in Plateau now able to access the platform online or offline, the NLP ensures inclusivity regardless of location,” he said.
Dr. Kachollom Gang, Commissioner for Education, emphasized the government’s vision to make technology a standard part of education across all parts of the state. “We are determined to ensure that digital tools are accessible not just in urban areas, but in the remotest communities as well,” she said, thanking UNICEF for its continued support.
SUBEB Chairman, Mr. Samuel Amuna, urged for increased education funding, in line with UNESCO’s recommendation of allocating 26% of national and sub-national budgets to the sector.
Representatives from the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) and the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) praised the initiative and pledged their support for its successful implementation.
A key highlight of the launch was the symbolic distribution of internet routers to 50 schools, marking the official rollout of the Nigeria Learning Passport across Plateau State.
