The Motherhood Rescue Mission: Well-Life Foundation Confronts Nigeria’s Fertility Crisis Head-On
Dr. Ibrahim Yakub Sime leads initiative to remove financial barriers to fertility treatment for low-income women
In a bold move to address Nigeria’s growing infertility crisis, the Well-Life Foundation, helmed by Executive Director Dr. Ibrahim Yakub Sime, has launched the Motherhood Rescue Mission—a targeted, life-affirming program offering fertility treatment access to women priced out of care.
Globally, 1 in 6 people experience infertility, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). In Nigeria, the problem is not only widespread but critically under-addressed. Lagos-based clinics report that infertility accounts for a staggering 26.8% of gynecological cases. For many Nigerian women, the inability to conceive is more than a medical issue—it fuels emotional distress, marital conflict, and unsafe treatment alternatives.
While diagnostic and therapeutic options exist, they are out of reach for many. A single hysteroscopy—a common procedure to diagnose and treat uterine abnormalities—costs between ₦350,000 and ₦500,000, more than eight months’ income for women earning under ₦100,000 a month.
The Mission’s Focus
The Motherhood Rescue Mission is laser-focused on women aged 20–45 who have been medically cleared for fertility procedures but lack the financial means to proceed. These women already have a treatment path and a chance at conception—but face an economic dead end.
In partnership with organizations such as Fertility Support Group Africa, the foundation vets applicants through a 60-day medical eligibility process, ensuring that every candidate has a high likelihood of positive outcomes if treated promptly.
Dr. Sime’s Well-Life Hospital has already seen transformative results with diagnostic hysteroscopies. With a 94% success rate in identifying treatable fertility issues, and up to 85% success when followed by further treatment for women under 40, the procedure is a proven game-changer.
“Too many women are being failed by the system—not because of medical limitations, but because of money,” says Dr. Sarah Adebayo, a fertility expert based in Abuja. “This initiative directly addresses that injustice.”
The program’s initial rollout is focused on Abuja and surrounding regions, using a transparent, data-driven model to track outcomes and measure impact.
