The Executive Chairman of the Plateau State Internal Revenue Service (PSIRS), Dr. Jim Pam Wayas, has urged players in the creative industry to take an active role in driving economic growth by embracing innovation and fulfilling their civic responsibilities. He made this call during the inaugural Plateau Creative Industry Engagement held at the Sarau Event Center, Jos.
Dr. Wayas highlighted the vast potential of the creative economy to transform Plateau’s economic landscape. He explained that creativity and taxation can work hand in hand to stimulate development, noting that thriving creative ventures generate employment, attract investments, and help build a more resilient economy.
Drawing attention to Nigeria’s low tax-to-GDP ratio compared to its African counterparts, he stressed the importance of broadening the tax base. According to him, every income earner, including those in the creative sector, has a role to play in strengthening the state’s revenue system and ensuring long-term sustainability.
Recognizing the growing impact of technology, the PSIRS has set up a special department focused on the digital economy. Dr. Wayas described data as “the new oil,” pointing out that many creatives already earn online but are yet to formalize their operations to access greater opportunities and benefits.
He clarified that the agency is not out to impose excessive taxes but to ensure fairness and inclusion in the system. Revenue generated, he explained, will be channeled toward infrastructure development and innovation across the state. He also emphasized that taxes are applied to profit, not poverty.
Dr. Wayas encouraged creatives to see tax compliance as a civic duty and a contribution to building a prosperous Plateau. He urged them to collaborate, innovate, and use their talents across music, film, technology, and the arts to tell Plateau’s story and attract global attention.
He assured stakeholders of the government’s commitment to creating a supportive environment that allows creativity to flourish and contribute meaningfully to the state’s development agenda.
