Plateau Transport Ministry Comforts Victims of Jos Train‑Tricycle Crash
In the wake of the deadly collision between a passenger train and a commercial tricycle (Keke NAPEP) at Dogon Karfe, Plateau State’s Ministry of Transport acted swiftly. Led by Permanent Secretary Mrs. Jummai Shekarau*, officials visited the injured at Plateau State Specialist Hospital to convey solidarity and compassion.
Mrs. Shekarau reiterated the ministry’s mandate: “We are responsible for transportation safety across the state, and incidents like this demand immediate action.” She added that the government is coordinating with the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and other agencies to investigate and tighten safety measures at railway crossings.
The crash, which occurred on Wednesday, claimed two lives and left several injured. Eyewitnesses said the train’s horn blared repeatedly, but the tricycle rider ignored warnings and attempted to cross the track. The ministry’s visit underscores its commitment to supporting victims and pushing for stricter enforcement of traffic and safety rules.
The injured are receiving treatment, and authorities have pledged to improve infrastructure and public education to prevent future tragedies.
Dr. Sai’du Barnabas, Director of Clinical Services at the Plateau State Specialist Hospital, provided an update on the victims. Of the three people involved, one was pronounced dead on arrival, while the two survivors, both women, sustained injuries. One had a serious leg fracture, which required surgery, and the other suffered bruises and minor cuts.
Both received emergency treatment provided by the Federal Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Plateau State Government.
Summaya Nasir, a student of Plateau State Polytechnic, Jos Campus, shared her account of the accident. She revealed that she and her sister were the only survivors among four people involved, while the other two lost their lives. She described the moment the train approached as the last thing she could remember.
Maryam Nasir, a guardian of both victims who are sisters, expressed profound gratitude to the Plateau State Ministry of Transport for their continued support since the incident. She commended officials for regularly visiting and monitoring the recovery of the victims,
emphasizing that their concern provided comfort during this difficult time.
Comr. Dandam Emmanuel, President of the Student Union Government (SUG) at Plateau State Polytechnic, thanked the Ministry of Transport for their prompt response to the accident. He acknowledged that the Commissioner personally ensured support by sending the family secretary to visit the victims and provide updates.
Comr. Dung Victor Langs, Speaker of the SUG, also commended the ministry for its efforts, noting that the intervention supports the students’ education and well-being while ensuring that the victims can recover fully and resume their studies safely.
