The Delta State Police Command has arrested Chief Omorede Sunday, alleged organizer of the Oramudu Festival in Ozoro, alongside four others, following widespread reports and viral videos of sexual violence against women during the event. The disturbing incident, which has sparked national outrage, prompted immediate action from the Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, who ordered a full-scale investigation into the matter.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the Commissioner condemned the reported acts, describing them as criminal, inhumane, and a grave violation of the fundamental rights and dignity of victims. He directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for thorough handling, while tactical and investigative teams have been deployed to identify and apprehend all those involved. Edafe assured the public that those responsible would be brought to justice, stressing that no cultural practice or tradition supersedes the rights and safety of citizens.
The police command also called on victims and witnesses to come forward with useful information, assuring confidentiality and professionalism in handling such reports. Residents were urged to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding as investigations continue, with assurances that the command remains committed to maintaining public order and safeguarding lives.
The incident gained widespread attention after videos surfaced online showing women being harassed and assaulted during what was described by some as a local festival. The footage triggered outrage, with many expressing concern over the safety of residents, particularly students, as Ozoro hosts Delta State University. Social media users also shared warnings advising women and girls to remain indoors amid fears of further attacks.
Providing an eyewitness perspective, a Nigerian man recounted his shock at witnessing the incident, stating he initially thought it was a joke before realizing the severity of the situation. Reports circulating online alleged that the festival, held annually in March, involves restrictions on women appearing in public, with violators subjected to harassment by groups of men—claims that have intensified calls for urgent intervention and accountability.
Reacting to the development, comedian and actor Freedom Atsepoyi, popularly known as Mr Jollof, expressed deep disappointment and outrage. In a video shared on his Instagram page, he described the incident as barbaric and shameful, particularly in a period marked by celebrations of women such as International Women’s Day and Mother’s Day.
“I feel so ashamed as a Deltan in 2026 if such attitude to disrespect women still exists. This is even women’s month… yet this is happening. That is barbaric,” he said.
Mr Jollof further called on the Delta State Government to urgently address the situation and ensure justice is served, raising concerns about the safety of young girls and students in the community. He questioned how parents could feel secure sending their daughters to school in such an environment.
Reaffirming the command’s stance, SP Bright Edafe reiterated that the police strongly condemn the incident and are committed to ensuring all perpetrators are apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law. Commissioner Aina Adesola also reassured the public that justice will be pursued diligently, emphasizing the police’s duty to protect the rights and dignity of all citizens.
