The Plateau State Government has sought the support of the Public Complaints Commission, PCC, to improve the conduct of Vehicle Inspection Office, VIO, personnel and strengthen relations with motorists.
The engagement is part of the Ministry of Transport’s stakeholder consultations ahead of the return of VIO officers to the roads, following recent attacks on personnel and concerns over their conduct.
Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Davou Gyang Jatau, said the visit was aimed at strengthening collaboration with the PCC and addressing issues arising from VIO operations.
He said the commission provided an important channel through which members of the public could seek redress when they felt aggrieved by government officials.
“We found it necessary to also come here, so that we can solidify our relationship, strengthen it and have a complaint-free society, a complaint-free community, a complaint-free environment.”
Jatau acknowledged concerns over the conduct of some VIO personnel, particularly alleged high-handedness, saying the ministry was already working to address the situation.
“We are not also oblivious of some levels of high-handedness from our own side. And internally, we’ve been working assiduously to see how best we can correct.”
He urged the PCC to share information on issues involving VIO personnel, assuring that the ministry would investigate and take appropriate action where necessary.
Jatau said the review of VIO operations would focus on professionalism, civility and better relations with motorists, while reiterating that the office’s primary responsibility was roadworthiness and safety.
The PCC Commissioner, Hon. Abbas Abdullahi Garba, commended Jatau for initiating the engagement, describing dialogue as essential to resolving challenges in the transport sector.
Garba said the commission was ready to support efforts to bring relevant stakeholders together and resolve issues surrounding VIO operations amicably.
“At least, let’s think outside the box to ensure that all the issues are tackled amicably. It’s the best way.”
He urged the Ministry of Transport to sustain dialogue with affected parties and other stakeholders, saying proactive engagement would promote peace and improve service delivery.
