The Plateau State Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency (PEPSA) has completed a two-day intensive sanitation and roadside clearing exercise aimed at enhancing environmental safety and road accessibility across Jos and surrounding areas. The operation, carried out yesterday and today, involved about 300 community workers supported by PEPSA’s internal sanitation personnel.
The cleanup targeted routes where overgrown shrubs and bushes had become safety risks by obstructing visibility for motorists and pedestrians. Major locations covered included Polo to Hill Station Roundabout, Old Airport, Secretariat to Airforce Base–Yingi Road down to Rayfield, Rayfield Resort to Gut-Dwoi Road, Murtala Way, and Millionaires Quarters Road–Lamingo Road. PEPSA noted that similar exercises will be extended to more parts of the state.
Throughout the exercise, teams cleared blocked drainages, trimmed thick vegetation, and tidied up roadside spaces—actions that significantly improved movement and safety along the affected corridors. PEPSA officials ensured constant supervision to maintain smooth and coordinated execution.
Representing the Director General, Samuel Dapiya, the Director of Waste Management, Mrs. Naomi Longlam, encouraged residents and business owners along the cleared areas to take ownership of their surroundings. She urged them to continue trimming shrubs, removing debris, and supporting the agency’s efforts, stressing that keeping Plateau State clean is a shared responsibility.
According to PEPSA, regular sanitation exercises help prevent bushfires, reduce pest breeding sites, improve road visibility, and promote a cleaner, healthier environment for all. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining environmental cleanliness and working closely with communities across the state.
