A Nigerian woman has alleged that after reporting an assault by a tricycle driver in Awka, police demanded ₦200,000 to “mobilise” officers to take action.

In a viral video, the woman recounted how the driver accosted her while she was on her way to the gym, grabbing her hands and refusing to let go. She said the incident left her shaken, especially as she had previously been robbed in the same area.

According to her, she tried to free herself by pouring water on the man, which reportedly angered him. He then allegedly attempted to beat her while insisting he was “only playing” and threatened her before speeding off when she tried to record him.

The woman claimed that even after paying a registration fee at the police station, officers told her she would need to pay ₦200,000 to ensure they acted on her complaint.

The video has since drawn attention online, with many calling for an investigation into both the alleged assault and the police’s handling of the case.
