In a significant humanitarian effort to improve rural living conditions, the Plateau State Association USA (PSA-USA) has completed and commissioned a series of borehole projects across several communities in Plateau State. Led by the association’s president, Dr. Barth Shepkong, the initiative aims to provide clean, accessible water to areas identified as being in dire need.
The intervention targeted four key locations: Jos Jarawa, Barkin Ladi, Shiwer in Kanke, and Jat Ward in Langtang North. According to Dr. Shepkong, the selection process was strictly merit-based, focusing on communities where water scarcity had reached a critical point.
The commissioning tour began in the Jos Jarawa community, where the PSA-USA delegation was greeted with a vibrant display of traditional drumming and singing. Receiving the team on behalf of the District Head, the Village Head of Jos Jarawa, Adagwom Christopher Azi, expressed profound gratitude for the project. He noted that the community had endured “untold hardship” for years and expressed confidence that the new water source would greatly ameliorate their daily struggles.
Supporting this sentiment, Hon. Ajik Amos, representing the local Member of the House of Representatives, emphasized that such international partnerships are essential for the transformation of local communities. In response, Dr. Shepkong thanked the elders and residents for their cooperation, specifically charging the local youth with the responsibility of guarding and maintaining the facility.
The mission continued to the Bet community in Barkin Ladi LG, where the project was specifically designed to combat a high incidence of water-borne diseases. The local residents took turns praising the association, noting that the gesture was not just a convenience, but a vital health intervention.
A similar scene of relief unfolded in Jat Ward of Langtang North. Women and children, who previously traveled long distances in search of water, welcomed the team with songs of praise. A community leader, while thanking Hon. Dirya Sheni and the PSA-USA team, used the opportunity to appeal for further community-driven projects to sustain development in the area.
As he officially handed over the final borehole for public use, Dr. Shepkong left the residents with a stern reminder regarding sustainability. He emphasized that while the association provided the infrastructure, the ultimate success of the project rests on the community’s ability to maintain and protect it for future generations.
