No fewer than 102 widows in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State have graduated from a three-month economic empowerment and psychosocial support programme, marking a significant step toward rebuilding their livelihoods after displacement caused by social unrest.
The programme, held at the Mangu Widowhood Centre, was organised by the Plateau State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development in partnership with the GIZ-PEACECORE Project and the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC).
The graduation ceremony represents the third cohort under the initiative, supported by the administration of Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, whose government has prioritised women’s economic empowerment through programmes such as the Nigeria for Women Project.
The event was attended by the First Lady of Plateau State, Barr. Helen Mutfwang, who served as Special Guest of Honour, alongside development partners including the United Nations Development Programme, government officials, traditional and religious leaders, and women stakeholders.
The beneficiaries received hands-on training in tailoring, catering, production of household consumables, and crafts. In addition to technical skills, they were equipped with business management knowledge and psychosocial support to aid their recovery and reintegration. Each graduate was provided with start-up kits, modern equipment, and financial support to enable them to establish micro-enterprises immediately.
Addressing the graduates, the First Lady described the initiative as a demonstration of the state’s commitment to restoring dignity through economic opportunity. She urged the women to utilise the skills acquired, form cooperatives, and support others in their communities.
In her remarks, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Caroline Pangiang Dafur, commended Governor Mutfwang for his commitment to institutionalising women’s empowerment programmes in the state. She also appreciated development partners for their technical and financial contributions, noting that the programme has successfully translated training into sustainable livelihoods.
The Ministry further assured that beneficiaries would be monitored through structured follow-up mechanisms, including support from local government desk officers and linkage to the Plateau Women Enterprise Fund to ensure long-term sustainability.
Speaking on behalf of the graduates, Mrs. Nvou Dung expressed gratitude to the state government and partners for the opportunity, pledging that the beneficiaries would make productive use of the skills and resources provided.
The Plateau State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development reiterated its commitment to expanding empowerment initiatives across communities, ensuring inclusive development for women across the state.
The event featured cultural performances and an exhibition of products made by the graduates, highlighting their readiness to compete in the market.
