The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard Doro, has said education remains a critical tool in tackling poverty and social exclusion in Nigeria.
Speaking at the UN Transforming Global Education Summit, Doro said the government’s intervention is focused on system reengineering, based on the strong link between education and poverty.
He noted that limited access to education continues to fuel inequality and sustain cycles of poverty across communities.
“With over 20 million out-of-school children in Nigeria, according to UNESCO, the solution must go beyond access to education alone. It must connect learning to real economic opportunity.”
“We’re building a unified system that links humanitarian support, skills development, and sustainable livelihoods, so education leads not only to certification but also to economic productivity through One Humanitarian, One Poverty Response System (OHOPRS).”
The minister said the government’s plan is designed to ensure vulnerable Nigerians gain practical skills and opportunities for self-reliance.
“We’re working to move vulnerable populations from dependence to self-reliance, while strengthening coordination, data systems, and partnerships to deliver lasting impact.”
Doro added that the initiative reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to reducing poverty through education, empowerment, and sustainable development.
