The Plateau State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Mrs. Kachollom P. Gang, on Tuesday, 26th May 2026, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Plateau State Government, through the Ministry of Education, and the Conference of Autochthonous Ethnic Community Development Association (CONAECDA).
The agreement is aimed at implementing and sustaining the teaching of indigenous mother tongues across schools in Plateau State as part of efforts to preserve the rich cultural and linguistic heritage of the people.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Dr. Gang, who signed on behalf of the Plateau State Government, emphasized the importance of protecting indigenous languages from extinction.
According to her, many native languages around the world have disappeared due to modernization, migration, urbanization, and the continuous search for better economic opportunities, making deliberate preservation efforts necessary.
The Memorandum is expected to pave the way for the teaching of indigenous languages in both primary and secondary schools across Plateau State, thereby promoting cultural identity and intergenerational language transmission.
Members of the public have described the initiative as timely and commendable, noting that several languages across the world have already gone extinct. Historical records show that languages such as Eyak became extinct in 2008, Ubykh in 1992, while Manx was declared extinct in 1974 before later being revived through education and community-driven efforts.
With the successful implementation of this initiative, it is expected that indigenous languages in Plateau State that are endangered or no longer widely spoken will gradually be revived through structured educational programmes.
