The National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, near Jos, became the target of a violent assault late Monday night when suspected gunmen attempted to infiltrate the country’s premier policy institution.
The attack, which began around 11:00 p.m. on June 15, 2026, triggered a fierce firefight that claimed the lives of two soldiers and one police officer stationed at the facility.
According to preliminary reports, the assailants targeted the residential quarters housing participants of the institute’s current programs. Security personnel reacted swiftly, mounting a strong resistance that blocked the attackers from breaching the residential wing and successfully preventing any abductions.
Sources revealed that the slain police officer was serving as an orderly to a retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police. The two soldiers were killed in action while actively engaging the gunmen.
“No participant was abducted because the security forces successfully repelled the attackers before they could enter the residential area,” a source familiar with the incident confirmed.
In the early hours of Tuesday, June 16, the NIPSS management released a statement acknowledging a security breach in the institute’s vicinity but assuring the public that the situation was firmly under control.
The statement, signed by Dr. Osime Samuel, mni, Head of Public Affairs, credited the rapid joint intervention of internal security and external agencies with stopping further escalation.
“There is currently no threat to the safety of participants, staff, residents, or facilities of the Institute, and normal activities are continuing as scheduled,” the statement read.
The management added that official investigations are underway and cautioned against social media speculation, urging the media and the public to rely strictly on verified updates from the institute and law enforcement.
While security has been heavily reinforced around the Kuru campus and a manhunt is underway for the fleeing perpetrators, authorities have not yet established a motive for the assault.
