Plateau State Governor Grants Pardon to Two Convicts on Democracy Day
Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has granted an absolute pardon to two convicts, Danjuma George and Yilmenen Bala, as a gesture of compassion and justice to commemorate the 2025 Democracy Day celebration.
The pardon, granted under Section 212 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), follows the convicts’ demonstration of genuine remorse and good conduct. Governor Mutfwang said the act underscores the principles of mercy, rehabilitation, and the rule of law which are fundamental to democratic governance.
In a statewide address commemorating Democracy Day, Governor Mutfwang joined millions of Nigerians at home and abroad to reflect on the nation’s democratic journey. He described the occasion as a solemn reminder of Nigeria’s enduring struggle for freedom, justice, and participatory governance.
“Democracy Day reminds us of the sacrifices of patriots—men and women who laid down their lives for a country ruled by the will of the people,” the governor said. “Their courage must continue to inspire us as we deepen our democratic values.”
Governor Mutfwang praised the resilience of Nigerians who, despite economic and security challenges, remain committed to the democratic ideal. He stressed that while Nigeria’s democratic experience is still maturing, progress has been made in areas such as political inclusion, freedom of expression, and institutional development
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to people-centered governance, vowing to improve lives and promote inclusiveness across Plateau State.
“We are determined to ensure that the dividends of democracy reach every citizen,” Mutfwang said. “Our goal is to unite the people of Plateau under a shared vision—to rebuild, reform, and reposition our state for greatness.”
He also acknowledged insecurity as one of the major hurdles facing the state, assuring citizens that his administration is working to protect rural communities, boost agriculture, and expand employment opportunities.
Governor Mutfwang concluded his message by calling on all Plateau residents—regardless of religion, ethnicity, or political affiliation—to rally behind the collective mission of building a stronger, more equitable, and prosperous state.
“Let us recommit ourselves to the ideals of justice, unity, and good governance. Together, we can secure a better future for Plateau and Nigeria,” he urged.
