Plateau Government to Consider Ad-Hoc Academic Staff for Employment Amid Recruitment Concerns
The Plateau State Government has announced new measures to address concerns surrounding recent recruitment exercises in the state’s tertiary institutions, including the consideration of long-serving ad-hoc academic staff for permanent employment.
In a press statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Arc. Samuel N. Jatau, the government said the decisions followed a meeting convened by Governor Caleb Mutfwang with Chairmen of Governing Councils, Heads of Tertiary Institutions, and other key stakeholders in the education sector.
Among the resolutions, the government indicated that academic staff aged 50 and above who were not included in recent appointments may be reconsidered for contract positions where their expertise is still needed.
Furthermore, ad-hoc academic staff who applied and were interviewed during the recent recruitment exercise will be considered for employment in areas with critical staffing needs.
In a bid to promote fairness and reward loyalty, institutions have also been directed to set up internal committees to evaluate and propose compensation for ad-hoc staff who have served for five years or more.
“Every institution is to establish an internal committee to assess and determine appropriate compensation for those who have served in ad-hoc positions for a period of five years and above,” the statement read.
Additionally, a Help Desk has been established at the Ministry of Education to address complaints from individuals with court judgments in their favour who feel they were unfairly excluded. Such complaints must be submitted no later than July 7, 2025.
These steps, according to the government, underscore its commitment to fairness, inclusivity, and due process in the recruitment and retention of academic personnel across the state.
