Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, on Wednesday inaugurated the new Jos Metropolitan Development Board (JMDB) Ultra-Modern Market in Bukuru, a project designed to address the challenges faced by traders and market women. He was accompanied by his deputy, Her Excellency Ngo Josephine Piyo.
The facility, built under the supervision of JMDB, contains 165 shops—including 16 warehouses, 133 lock-up shops, 15 small shops, 116 stalls—and open spaces for hawkers, with capacity for more than 2,000 traders. It also provides a motor park and parking lot for easy access and mobility.
Governor Mutfwang described the market as a “lifeline” for traders who had been displaced and left without proper business spaces.
“This market is not just a trading hub; it is a lifeline for our traders, particularly women, who have endured harsh conditions for years. In line with our people-centered approach, I have directed that displaced women be given priority in shop allocations,” he said.
He explained that the initiative is part of his administration’s Greater Jos Master Plan, which seeks to create modern, functional cities with world-class infrastructure to promote commerce and investment. He also announced upcoming reconstruction projects at Kugiya Market, Jos Main Market, Maraban Jama’a Market, and several neighborhood markets across Plateau State.
The governor commended JMDB General Manager, Arc. Hart Bankat, for his commitment in delivering the project, noting that the board’s revival under his leadership is proof that “with the right leadership, every institution can function.”
In his remarks, Arc. Bankat thanked the governor for his support and CTM for donating land for the project. He disclosed that construction began in July 2024 and was completed in record time. He further revealed that a second phase of the market is underway, with more land already secured for expansion.
“This clean and well-organized environment will boost economic activities and transform Bukuru into a modern trading hub. With phase two already in progress, we are confident this project will redefine urban development in Plateau State,” he said.
Goodwill messages were delivered by the Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Daniel Gapyil Naanlong; Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Hon. Sylvanus Dongtoe; Managing Director of Spade Investment Ltd, Gari Kim Wayas; and a traders’ representative, Yakubu Muhammad. They emphasized the project’s role in empowering women and strengthening Plateau’s economy.
Governor Mutfwang called on traders and community members to take ownership of the facility through proper maintenance and collective responsibility.
“Our goal is to leave a lasting legacy in the hearts of Plateau people. Together, we can build a prosperous and resilient economy for today and future generations,” he said.
