A tragic road accident on November 19, 2025, claimed the lives of several Prospective Corps Members (PCMs) traveling to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Gombe State. The incident has triggered widespread grief and renewed calls for reforms to the NYSC posting and travel system.

The crash occurred along a major highway as a passenger bus transported PCMs from Ondo State in southwestern Nigeria to Gombe State in the northeast. The 18 passengers were en route to the 2025 Batch C1 orientation camp, which commenced registration the same day.

Sixteen PCMs died at the scene, while two survivors were rescued. Their medical conditions have not yet been disclosed.

Preliminary accounts attribute the tragedy to the long and strenuous multi-state journey—often lasting 12–15 hours or more. Though the exact cause is still under investigation, fatigue, poor road infrastructure, and lengthy travel durations remain common contributors to similar accidents.

Many Nigerians urged the NYSC to reconsider its posting strategy, arguing that assigning corps members to faraway states puts them at unnecessary risk.

As of November 19, 2025, NYSC has not released a formal statement regarding the crash. The organization recently issued call-up letters on November 17 and reminded PCMs to avoid night travel and arrange their documents ahead of time. Local authorities are expected to provide updates on the investigation and victim identification.

This heartbreaking incident highlights the significant risks facing young graduates during compulsory national service. Tributes and condolences continue to pour in, as families, communities, and the nation mourn the loss of bright young lives.
