The Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Plateau State, in collaboration with the Joint Task Force – Operation Enduring Peace, successfully held a “Peace Walk” aimed at fostering unity and calm during the festive season.
The event, themed “Towards a Peaceful Yuletide,” took place today, December 6, with participants walking from Old Airport Junction through Tudun Wada to the Hill Station Roundabout.
A large turnout of residents showcased their commitment to peace, tolerance, harmony, and togetherness as Plateau State prepares for Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Mr. Ibrahim Kallamu, Secretary of the Plateau Bloggers and Online Media Association, praised the organizers for championing peace across the state. He noted that the Peace Walk represented the collective will of citizens to uphold unity and reaffirmed Plateau as a welcoming and safe destination.
He stressed that peace and stability are vital for tourism and business growth, urging journalists to combat misinformation and share only verified reports to attract investors and visitors.
Mr. Polycarp Auta, Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, explained that the Peace Walk builds on earlier peace-centered initiatives by the chapel. He expressed gratitude to the Joint Task Force and other security agencies for their support, adding that the walk was not just about reporting security issues but actively promoting peaceful coexistence.
He encouraged citizens to live in harmony, show tolerance, and extend love during the Christmas season. He also thanked participants for their dedication and prayed for safe returns.
Chairperson of the NUJ, Mrs. Ayuku Pwaspo, urged journalists and bloggers to remain committed to peace-driven reporting. She called for responsible journalism that reinforces calm and unity within communities, expressing hope for a peaceful Christmas celebration across the state.
Representing Brigadier General G. G. Shipi, Commander of Operation Rainbow, CSP Dennis Babale commended the Correspondents’ Chapel, describing the Peace Walk as a vital effort toward enhancing community wellbeing.
Executive Director of the Plateau Peace Practitioners Network, Mr. Bali Nanmak, also applauded the initiative, stressing that unity must transcend political, religious, and social divisions.
Mr. Gad Shamaki, a civil society leader, celebrated the diverse participation—including children, youth, public officials, and community members. He also appreciated journalists from Eritrea and Nigeria for spotlighting the effort, which contributes to a safer society.
ASC Nanko Rimvyok, representing the NSCDC State Commandant Musa Ishaku, commended the organizers and reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to safeguarding critical assets and sustaining peace across the state.
The Peace Walk ultimately showcased the combined efforts of media professionals, security agencies, civil society groups, and the general public in fostering tolerance, harmony, and unity across Plateau State during the yuletide season.
