Residents of Woro community were thrown into panic on Monday morning after reports emerged of an explosion that reportedly claimed multiple lives.
A community source told SaharaReporters that the blast occurred in the early hours when a vehicle reportedly ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), believed to have been planted by Boko Haram operatives. “There was an explosion around Woro this morning. The explosion claimed lives, number of lives lost not certain,” the source said.
Another resident, Aliyu Yahuza, confirmed the incident, underscoring fears that the community remains under sustained threat from armed groups. Efforts to independently verify casualties and obtain comments from the DSP Toun Ejire-Adeyemi were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
The attack comes amid a prolonged security crisis in Woro. In February 2026, suspected Boko Haram terrorists carried out a deadly invasion, killing dozens of residents and abducting at least 176 people—including women, children, and a nursing mother. The attackers demanded a N20 million ransom per victim, while negotiations with the Kwara State Government reportedly stalled.
Families of the abducted have voiced growing frustration over the prolonged silence, fearing that some captives may have died from hunger, illness, or lack of medical care. “We are living in fear every day. We don’t know whether our people are alive or dead,” a relative said.
The February attack claimed the lives of two wives of the Emir, several of his children, the Chief Imam, a school principal, a headmistress, and students who had just returned from school. Buildings, including the Emir’s palace, were set ablaze, and abducted residents were paraded in a video in which the attackers accused the Kwara State Government of downplaying the crisis.
The recent explosion has heightened concerns that Boko Haram may be escalating attacks in Woro and other communities in Kwara North, where insecurity continues to deepen.
