The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has confirmed that 13 Nigerians, among 42 earlier arrested in Mozambique, have been deported to Nigeria despite reportedly committing no offence.
In a statement issued on Friday by its Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the commission disclosed that the returnees arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
According to NiDCOM, Mozambican authorities claimed the affected Nigerians lacked proper documentation. However, the deportees reportedly presented evidence showing they had valid residence permits, except for one individual whose visa had expired a day before the deportation.
Receiving the returnees on behalf of NiDCOM Chairman/CEO, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the commission’s representative, Dipo Odebowale, described the treatment meted out to them as unfair and expressed hope that the Minister of Foreign Affairs would take up the matter with his Mozambican counterpart.
The deportees, who arrived aboard South African Airways flight SA60, said they were arrested at their various business premises in Maputo and detained despite possessing valid documents.
They also revealed that 29 other Nigerians remain in detention in Maputo, calling for urgent intervention from Nigerian authorities.
While welcoming them back, Dabiri-Erewa sympathised with their ordeal and urged Nigerians living abroad to respect the laws of their host countries. She, however, stressed that no Nigerian should be punished for offences they did not commit.
The deported individuals, all adult males, appealed to NiDCOM to help them seek justice and redress over their treatment.
