The trial of five suspects in connection to the Angwan Rukuba attack in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State has been adjourned to April 30, 2026.
The adjournment was granted by Honourable Justice JD Fomyil to allow the defendants secure legal representation before taking their plea.
The suspects were brought before the Plateau State High Court, where proceedings could not continue due to the absence of defence counsel.
The Angwan Rukuba attack, which occurred recently, reportedly claimed about 20 lives, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Speaking after the court session, the Solicitor General of Plateau State, Joel Takbal, said the suspects would remain in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) pending further investigation.
Takbal explained that the government rushed to arraign the suspects to avoid violating their fundamental rights while investigations continue.
He noted that the suspects were arrested following intensified security operations after the attack, particularly after President Bola Tinubu directed security agencies to take decisive action.
According to him, the arraignment marks a departure from previous practice where suspects were taken outside the state for prosecution.
He said the current approach allows the case to be handled within Plateau State, ensuring transparency and accessibility for affected communities.
Takbal also disclosed that one of the suspects was initially arraigned separately due to additional offences linked to attacks in Riyom and Barkin Ladi areas.
He explained that those offences, committed between 2025 and early 2026, were distinct from the Angwan Rukuba case, hence the separate charge.
The Solicitor General commended the collaboration between the Federal Government, the state government, and security agencies, expressing optimism that justice will be served.
