The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the assumption of duty of a new Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Plateau State, following a recent redeployment within the Commission.
The new REC, Samuel Egwu, officially resumed office on Monday, April 20, 2026, at the INEC State Office in Jos.
Professor Egwu was redeployed from Benue State, where he previously served in the same capacity before his new posting.
He is a Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Jos and hails from Kogi State.
Prior to his recent assignment, he served as Resident Electoral Commissioner in Niger State from 2017 to 2022, and later in Benue State from 2022 to 2026.
He takes over from Mohammed Abubakar Sadiq, who has been redeployed to Nasarawa State.
In his remarks, the new REC called for the cooperation of all stakeholders in Nigeria’s electoral process, stressing that INEC cannot achieve its mandate without collective support.
He highlighted the importance of collaboration with political parties, candidates, voters, security agencies, the media, and the general public in ensuring credible elections.
According to him, strong partnerships are key to conducting free, fair, and transparent elections that will guarantee legitimacy for elected leaders.
INEC in Plateau State also expressed optimism about increased public engagement in the coming months to build trust and confidence among voters ahead of the 2027 general elections.
