Panic and shock gripped a bank in India after a man exhumed his late sister’s remains and brought the skeleton to demand access to her savings.
The incident occurred on Monday, April 27, 2026, in Malipasi area of Keonjhar district, Odisha.
The man, identified as Jitu Munda, had reportedly been trying to withdraw about ₹20,000 belonging to his elder sister, Kalara Munda, who died on January 26, however, bank officials allegedly insisted he provide proper documentation, including proof of death and legal heir status, before the funds could be released.
Frustrated by the repeated demands, the 59-year-old dug up his sister’s grave and carried her skeletal remains in a sack to the bank premises as evidence.
According to punch newspaper, he said “I told them she had died, but they did not listen. That is why I brought her skeleton to show them,”
The development was said to have caused a scene at the bank, drawing attention from customers and staff before police were alerted.
Indian security operatives later arrived at the scene, calmed the situation and advised the man to follow due process by obtaining a legal heir certificate.
The police subsequently ensured the remains were reburied, noting that the incident stemmed from lack of awareness of banking procedures.
According to Indian security officers who were at the scene, efforts are being made to assist the man in accessing the funds through proper legal channels.
