The National Orientation Agency, NOA, Osun State Directorate, has called for equitable access to anti-inflammatory inhalers as part of activities marking World Asthma Day 2026.

The agency said the commemoration aligns with global efforts to raise awareness about asthma and improve access to essential treatment for those living with the condition.

The day is annually marked on May 5 and this year’s theme is “Access to Anti-Inflammatory Inhalers for Everyone with Asthma – Still an Urgent Need”.

Speaking during the event, the Osun State Director of NOA, Adebiyi Adefarasin Stephen, described asthma as a serious public health concern affecting millions of people worldwide.

He explained that “the condition inflames and narrows the airways, leading to breathing difficulties and, in severe cases, death if not properly managed.

“Many asthma-related complications and deaths are preventable through early diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and sustained public awareness.”

Adebiyi urged residents of Osun State to recognise early symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness and persistent coughing.

He also advised individuals to seek prompt medical attention at the onset of symptoms and adhere strictly to prescribed treatments, including the correct use of inhalers.

The NOA director “encouraged residents to avoid common triggers such as dust, smoke, pollution and allergens that could worsen asthma conditions.”

He called on healthcare providers, policymakers and community leaders to “prioritise making asthma care affordable and accessible, particularly for vulnerable populations.

“Every breath matters. Through collective efforts in awareness, prevention, and access to proper treatment, we can save lives and improve quality of life.”
