The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) Jos and District Society has organized the Catch Them Young Programme for secondary school students in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State. The programme, held at Mangu Secondary School, aimed at inspiring students to develop interest in the accounting profession and academic excellence.
The event brought together students from 10 secondary schools across Mangu LGA, including Boys and Girls Secondary School Gindiri, COCIN Comprehensive Gindiri, and Government Secondary School Ampang, among others.
The initiative aligns with ICAN’s mission to produce world-class chartered accountants and promote high ethical and professional standards, while maintaining its vision of becoming a leading global professional body.
Speaking during the event, Pam Musa Chung, Chairman ICAN Plateau State, said the programme was organized to educate secondary school students on how to become members of ICAN and build careers in accounting.
“The essence of this programme is to tell them that even when they finish secondary school with five credits in Mathematics and English, they can register and start the examination to become AAT members,” he said.
He explained that many people wrongly believe students must first graduate from a university or polytechnic before registering for ICAN examinations, adding that the initiative was aimed at broadening students’ understanding of the accounting profession.
Also speaking, the Principal of Mangu Secondary School expressed confidence that the programme would inspire students to pursue careers as chartered accountants in the future.
“We believe that at the end of it all, we shall get those that will say, ‘I will be an accountant,’” the principal stated while appreciating ICAN for organizing the programme.
During her presentation, Maryam Justin Davwet highlighted ICAN’s mission to produce world-class chartered accountants and continually enhance their ethical standards and technical competence in the public interest.
She encouraged the students to remain disciplined, determined, and focused in pursuing careers in accounting, noting that the profession offers leadership opportunities, respect, and strong career prospects.
In the second presentation, Dawuk Walshak explained that secondary school students can begin the journey to becoming chartered accountants through the ATSWA and AAT programmes once they obtain five credits, including Mathematics and English.
“The programme is designed to produce middle-level accounting technicians within the West African sub-region,” he explained.
Encouraging the students, Sandra Kwap shared her personal journey into accounting and urged them to take advantage of the opportunities provided by ICAN.
“So please maximize this opportunity. Even if you are not going to be in the accounting field, anybody can write ICAN,” she advised.
Speaking on behalf of the students, Imrana Salisu Ibrahim commended ICAN for organizing the programme, describing it as an eye-opening initiative that inspired many students to develop interest in the accounting profession.
In his vote of thanks, Ayodeji Akinrinlola appreciated the students, teachers, and management of the school for supporting the programme despite the public holiday.
“ICAN is for you. As far as Nigeria and Africa are concerned, ICAN is one of the highest brands you can ever think of in an accounting body,” he said.
