Former Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly and former member of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. George Daika, has called on the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to uphold the outcome of the recently conducted rerun primary election for the Mikang State Constituency seat.
Daika made the appeal amid growing debate over the conduct and outcome of the rerun exercise, which was organized to determine the party’s candidate for the 2027 Plateau State House of Assembly election.
The former Speaker said party members in Mikang turned out to participate in the exercise with the expectation that their votes would count and that the outcome would reflect the will of the people.
“The rerun election was an opportunity for APC members in Mikang to freely choose their preferred candidate. The outcome should therefore be respected and protected in the interest of justice and democracy,” Daika stated.
He expressed concern over reports of violence, intimidation, and electoral irregularities recorded in some wards during the exercise, noting that such incidents should not be allowed to undermine the integrity of the process.
According to him, party leaders have a responsibility to ensure that every legitimate vote cast by members is recognized and that decisions regarding the election are guided by fairness and the party’s established rules.
“What APC members expect is a transparent process. The party must demonstrate that it remains committed to internal democracy and fairness at all levels,” he said.
Daika also emphasized the importance of maintaining political stability in Mikang through respect for democratic principles and long-standing political understandings among stakeholders.
He argued that preserving confidence in the party’s electoral process would strengthen unity within the APC and encourage greater participation by members in future elections.
The former lawmaker further urged party faithful to remain calm and law-abiding while awaiting the final decision of the party leadership regarding the rerun.
“I appeal to our supporters to remain peaceful and patient. The leadership of the party should ensure that justice is done and that the wishes of party members prevail,” he added.
Daika commended APC members across Mikang for their commitment to the democratic process despite the challenges experienced during the rerun exercise.
He also called on the APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, and other party leaders to protect the credibility of the exercise by ensuring that the final outcome reflects the votes cast by party members.
“Protecting the integrity of this process will strengthen the APC and deepen public confidence in democratic institutions. The party must allow the will of the people to stand,” he said.
