Comrade Prince Miaphen has assumed office as the Plateau State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, taking over the ministry at a time when expectations are high for renewed focus on youth empowerment and sports development in the state.
Miaphen formally took over from the former Commissioner, Hon. Musa Ibrahim Ashoms, as part of the recent cabinet reshuffle by Governor Caleb Mutfwang aimed at repositioning the administration for improved service delivery.
Speaking during the handing-over ceremony, Ashoms, who is now Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, urged Plateau youths to support his successor and ensure his administration succeeds.
Ashoms highlighted some of the achievements recorded during his tenure, including Plateau’s performance at the National Sports Festival, where the state won 96 medals.
He also disclosed that more than 500 people benefited from an empowerment programme involving industrial sewing machines and laptops, describing the initiative as part of efforts to create opportunities for young people.
Ashoms described Miaphen as capable, resourceful and youthful, expressing confidence in his ability to build on the achievements of the ministry.
“Prince Miaphen has displayed capacity. He is resourceful, youthful and useful, and I know he has the capacity to mobilise our youth,” Ashoms said.
He urged Plateau youths to give the new Commissioner the necessary support, stressing that his success would have a direct impact on the future of young people in the state.
“If we succeed, Plateau Youth will succeed. If we fail, Plateau Youth will fail. But I don’t wish that we fail,” he said.
Responding, Miaphen pledged to operate an open-door policy and work closely with staff, youth organisations and other stakeholders to advance the development of the ministry.
He assured stakeholders that his administration would prioritise accountability, teamwork and inclusiveness, while also promising to renovate the three youth centres located across the state’s three senatorial zones within his first 100 days in office.
“I am a team player. I want to work with all of you, and I promise I will not leave you behind. We will work together to achieve the policies of His Excellency,” Miaphen said.
The Commissioner also announced plans for a youth tour across the 17 local government areas to engage young people at the grassroots, listen to their concerns and promote unity, while pledging greater attention to grassroots sports development.
