Former Senate Minority Leader, Senator Simon Mwadkwon, has dismissed speculation that he is being positioned to replace Plateau State Deputy Governor, Ngo Josephine Piyo, describing the claim as unfounded political speculation.
The rumour, which surfaced on social media, had suggested that Mwadkwon was among those being considered for the deputy governorship. But his campaign directorate said the former senator has no such ambition and remains focused on his 2027 Senate bid.
The campaign team, in a statement yesterday, said Mwadkwon had not been approached over any proposed change in the state’s leadership and was not part of any discussion concerning Piyo’s position.
“We wish to state categorically that this claim is false, baseless, and without an iota of truth. At no time has the thought of replacing the Deputy Governor crossed Senator Mwadkwon’s mind,” the statement said.
Rather than pursue the deputy governorship, the former lawmaker is concentrating on returning to the Senate to represent Plateau North, according to his campaign team.
The directorate said Mwadkwon’s political activities were currently centred on consultations and preparations aimed at securing the support of constituents for the 2027 election.
“Senator Mwadkwon remains focused on his political aspirations and is working assiduously to secure the mandate of the good people of Plateau North to represent them in the Senate come 2027,” it stated.
The campaign team also sought to dispel any suggestion of a rift between Mwadkwon and Piyo, saying the former senator continues to maintain a cordial relationship with the Deputy Governor.
It said the relationship between both politicians provided no basis for the claim that Mwadkwon was interested in taking over her office.
“There is therefore no basis whatsoever for associating him with any purported move to replace her,” the directorate said.
The development comes as political activities gradually intensify in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections, with politicians and their supporters increasingly engaging in consultations and public messaging.
Against this backdrop, the campaign team urged the public not to attach credibility to what it described as an unverified social media narrative.
It also appealed to social media users to check the authenticity of political information before sharing it, warning that false claims could unnecessarily heighten tension among political stakeholders.
“We recognise the right of individuals to express their opinions, but we urge members of the public and social media users to exercise responsibility by verifying information before circulating unsubstantiated claims,” the statement said.
The directorate assured that Mwadkwon would continue to engage political leaders and stakeholders across Plateau State with what it described as maturity and respect.
It said his political journey remained anchored on effective representation and contributing to the development of Plateau North, Plateau State and Nigeria.
“Senator Simon Mwadkwon remains committed to his political journey and will continue to conduct himself with maturity, dignity, and respect for all political leaders and stakeholders across Plateau State,” it added.
The campaign team therefore urged the public to disregard the report, stressing that Mwadkwon has neither been involved in nor contemplated any arrangement to replace Deputy Governor Piyo.
With the clarification, the former senator’s camp maintained that his political focus remains firmly on the Plateau North Senate contest ahead of 2027.
