Abuja was thrown into tension on Tuesday when the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, clashed with a military officer over an alleged case of land encroachment in the Gaduwa District.

The confrontation  captured on video and now viral  has reignited debates about power, privilege, and accountability in Nigeria’s capital city.

Minister Wike led officials of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to Plot 1946 in Gaduwa following reports of illegal construction on land allegedly linked to former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo (Ret’d).

According to FCTA officials, the disputed site lies within a “buffer zone” — an area under the Abuja Master Plan where no valid allocation or building approval should exist.

However, upon arrival, Wike’s team reportedly encountered armed soldiers guarding the property, triggering a tense standoff.

Eyewitness videos circulating online show Wike confronting a uniformed officer who insisted that the property was legally acquired.:

Despite efforts by aides to calm both parties, neither side backed down. Wike reportedly ended the encounter by warning:

The confrontation isn’t just about a single plot of land — it highlights deep-rooted issues in Abuja’s land administration system.

Since taking office, Wike has pledged to restore the Abuja Master Plan, demolish illegal structures, and confront land racketeering, no matter how influential the parties involved.

This incident underscores the tension between civilian oversight and military influence in land governance a long-standing issue in the FCT.

As of now, neither the FCTA nor the Nigerian military has released a detailed statement.
Sources within the administration suggest that an official investigation into the disputed plot may already be in motion.
