A three-member caretaker committee has been constituted to oversee the affairs of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Plateau State Council, following the inability of the Credentials Committee to conduct the chapel’s elections one month after its inauguration.
The caretaker committee became necessary after the three-member Credentials Committee, which was inaugurated to conduct the 2026 chapel elections, resigned from its assignment.
It would be recalled that all aspirants who purchased nomination forms for the positions of Secretary, Financial Secretary, and Auditor—Jude Dawam, Lola Belo, and Ado Musa, respectively—withdrew from the race. The only remaining contestant was Douglas Francis of Arise Television, who was vying for the position of Chairman. His opponent, Polycarp Auta, the outgoing Chairman, had earlier stepped down from the contest, according to the Credentials Committee.
Consequently, the Plateau State NUJ Council, the supervising body for all chapel elections, after consultations with the NUJ National Secretariat and in line with the amended constitution of the union, inaugurated a three-member caretaker committee on Monday. The committee, made up of former Chairmen of the Plateau State Correspondents’ Chapel, has been mandated to oversee the affairs of the chapel for the next two weeks and conduct a free, fair, credible, and acceptable election that will produce new executives to administer the chapel for a three-year tenure.
Meanwhile, the outgoing executives of the Correspondents’ Chapel, led by Polycarp Auta, whose tenure expired on Monday, July 27, 2026, officially handed over the affairs of the chapel to the caretaker committee after a valedictory session.
The caretaker committee is chaired by the NUJ National Auditor (Zone D), Mrs. Tongnaan Dada Bawa, while Mr. Yemi Kosoko serves as Secretary. Mr. Kosoko received the handover on behalf of the committee.
