In a move aimed at strengthening transparency and protecting citizens’ rights, the Plateau State Commissioner for Transport, Davou Gyang Jatau, has inaugurated an independent committee to investigate allegations of misconduct and excesses by officials of the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO).
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on Thursday, the commissioner underscored the critical role of the transport sector in driving economic development and fostering social cohesion across Plateau State. He acknowledged the VIO’s mandate to ensure vehicle safety, enforce traffic regulations, and promote roadworthiness, but stressed that enforcement must always remain within legal and ethical boundaries.
“The transport sector is a pillar of our economy, and the Vehicle Inspection Office plays a crucial role in ensuring road safety. Yet recent complaints have raised concerns over misconduct, harassment, and overzealous enforcement by some officials,” he stated.
Committee Mandate and Timeline
The committee, carefully selected for integrity and professional competence, has been tasked with reviewing petitions, investigating reported incidents, identifying systemic challenges, and recommending corrective measures. It has been given a two-week deadline, starting from February 20, to submit its report.

Addressing VIO officers and leadership, Jatau clarified that the investigation should not be seen as condemnation but as an opportunity to reinforce professionalism, refine operational procedures, and enhance service delivery.
“This process is a chance to reinforce respect for citizens and enhance institutional credibility,” he noted.
He further urged members of the public to cooperate with the committee by providing credible information where necessary, emphasizing that constructive engagement is key to meaningful reform.

The commissioner reassured residents that the Plateau State Government will implement practical reforms based on the committee’s findings. Proposed measures include strengthening disciplinary mechanisms, improving staff training, and ensuring traffic law enforcement is carried out with both firmness and compassion.
