President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the immediate installation of 5,000 CCTV cameras across key flashpoints in Plateau State as part of urgent efforts to curb the worsening security situation.
The directive was issued during his emergency visit to the state on Thursday, where he met briefly with stakeholders at Yakubu Gowon Airport following the recent attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos, which left at least 28 people dead after gunmen struck.
The President also approved the creation of a delegation made up of key stakeholders to pursue further discussions on lasting solutions to the crisis. He extended his condolences to the victims’ families and directed that immediate support be provided to help ease their losses.
Speaking at the meeting, Tinubu emphasized the need for unity and collective responsibility in ending the cycle of violence, stressing that no compensation can replace lives lost. He reassured residents of the Federal Government’s commitment to restoring peace and preventing future attacks.
“We must break the shackles of violence, ignorance, poverty, and hopelessness together,” he said, while commending security agencies for their efforts and urging them to intensify operations to bring perpetrators to justice.
He added that upon returning to Abuja, the Federal Government would expand the stakeholder committee to include more leaders and roll out data-driven support initiatives for affected families.
Plateau State Governor, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, described the visit as timely and reassuring, noting that it reflects strong federal commitment to addressing insecurity. While acknowledging the recent attack as a setback, he expressed confidence that Plateau would overcome its challenges and reclaim its identity as the “Home of Peace and Tourism.”
Mutfwang also called for sustained federal support, including further engagements in Abuja to develop long-term security strategies.
Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, revealed that the CCTV rollout will incorporate artificial intelligence-powered surveillance systems, beginning with Jos, noting that similar solutions have delivered results in other parts of the country.
On behalf of traditional rulers, the Gbong Gwom Jos, Jacob Gyang Buba, commended the President’s visit and appealed for an opportunity for Plateau leaders to meet with him in Abuja to present a detailed briefing on the state’s security situation.
Other notable figures, including APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, former Governor Jonah Jang, Senator Simon Lalong, and Hon. Idris Wase, also praised the President’s intervention and called for sustained dialogue and coordinated action to address the long-standing insecurity in Plateau State.
