EFCC Releases 15 Former Plateau Lawmakers, Including Ex-Speaker Thomas Sule

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released 15 former members of the Plateau State House of Assembly, including former Speaker Rt. Hon. Thomas Sule. Their release follows several days in detention over alleged misconduct during their tenure.

The ex-lawmakers were arrested last week for reportedly refusing to return official government vehicles after their removal from office, following a judgment by the Court of Appeal. Their detention sparked strong reactions in political circles across Plateau State.

According to sources familiar with the situation, the EFCC initially set strict bail conditions, prompting concerns about the fairness of the process. Despite this, all 15 former legislators have now fulfilled the requirements for their release.

“The EFCC allegedly imposed tough bail terms even though the lawmakers pleaded not guilty to the allegations,” a source close to the case revealed.

The investigation centers on claims of financial misappropriation and the unlawful retention of state-owned vehicles after the lawmakers’ terms ended. If substantiated, these charges could carry serious legal implications.

While they have been granted bail, the investigation is ongoing. The EFCC is expected to continue its probe and may move forward with prosecution in the coming weeks.

This case adds a fresh twist to the ongoing political tensions in Plateau State, with observers closely watching as the matter progresses toward trial.
