A bill proposing the creation of additional Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Plateau State has successfully passed its second reading in the House of Representatives.
The bill, sponsored by Rt. Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase, former Deputy Speaker of the House, is aimed at enhancing grassroots governance and accelerating development across the state.
While leading the debate, Wase explained that the initiative seeks to address long-standing issues of access, equity, and balanced development within Plateau communities. He noted that the establishment of more LGAs would bring governance closer to the people, particularly those in remote and underserved areas.
According to him, smaller and more manageable local councils would significantly improve service delivery, especially in key sectors such as primary healthcare, basic education, and rural infrastructure.
Wase further emphasized that the bill would promote inclusiveness and fairness among the state’s diverse communities and ethnic groups. Supporters of the proposal argued that the creation of additional LGAs would deepen political participation and enhance representation at both state and federal levels.
The bill also highlighted potential economic advantages, including an increase in Plateau State’s share of federal allocations. Proponents added that the new LGAs would be better positioned to harness local resources and stimulate economic growth.
Following its passage at second reading, the bill will now proceed to subsequent stages of legislative scrutiny in the House of Representatives.
