Plateau State Governor, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has alleged that desperate politicians are behind the recurring insecurity and violent attacks in the state in an attempt to destabilize his administration.
The governor made the claim while addressing a group of journalists who paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House in Jos on Tuesday.
Mutfwang said the repeated violence by terrorists and bandits in several communities, leading to the killing of innocent residents, appears to be linked to political interests, especially during election periods.
He cited past incidents such as the March 7, 2010 Dogo Nahawa massacre, where over 1,000 people were reportedly killed, and the March 29 attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area, where more than 30 persons lost their lives.
According to the governor, the timing of such attacks during political seasons raises serious concerns about sponsorship and motive.
“I make bold to say that the insecurity situation in Plateau State is being sponsored by desperate politicians who are out to destabilize the state,” Mutfwang said.
He added that the pattern of violence suggests that politics may be a stronger factor than extremism alone.
“If you noticed, this violence and attacks always peak during election cycles. What does that tell us? It is a clear indication that it is political; in fact, they are more political than terrorism.”
Governor Mutfwang also referred to recent attacks in Kanam, Wase, and Quan Pan Local Government Areas, which are largely Muslim communities.
He argued that if the violence were purely religiously motivated, the attackers would not target people who share the same faith.
“From our investigations, we have discovered that these attacks are being sponsored by desperate politicians who are bent on destroying Plateau. But we will not allow that to happen.”
The governor assured residents that his administration would continue to work with security agencies to expose those behind the attacks and restore lasting peace across the state.
