No fewer than 19 persons have been reportedly killed after armed attackers invaded Kawel community in Mushere District of Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State on Sunday night.
The assailants were said to have struck the village at about 11:40 p.m., catching residents off guard as many had already retired to bed. Survivors said the attackers opened fire on homes and fleeing residents, leaving multiple casualties in their wake.
Several others sustained injuries during the attack and are receiving treatment, while many families have been displaced following the latest violence.
A resident, Malo Bitrus, said the community came under heavy gunfire as villagers scrambled for safety.
According to him, the attack resulted in significant loss of lives, with many victims unable to escape before the gunmen reached their homes.
The Bokkos Youth Leader, Christopher Luka, who confirmed the incident, said information about the attack reached community leaders shortly after midnight.
“We received distress calls from the area informing us that gunmen had invaded the community and shot several residents. So far, 19 people have been confirmed dead,” he said.
Luka explained that security agencies were immediately notified after the report was received.
“As soon as we got the information, we contacted security personnel who assured us that they were mobilising to the community,” he added.
He expressed concern over the recurring attacks in parts of Bokkos and called for stronger security measures to prevent further loss of lives.
The latest incident comes days after the killing of the District Head of Gwande, Saf Samuel Alaket, who was reportedly attacked by gunmen while returning from an official engagement.
Residents say the renewed violence has deepened fears among communities in the area, with many calling for increased security deployment and proactive measures to halt the attacks.
At the time of filing this report, neither the Plateau State Police Command nor Operation Safe Haven had released an official statement on the incident.
The attack adds to growing concerns over security in Plateau State, where communities continue to seek lasting solutions to recurring violence and threats to lives and property.
