Former House of Representatives member and APC candidate for Jos South/Jos East Federal Constituency, Hon. Dachung Musa Bagos, has commended the 10th House of Representatives for passing the constitutional amendment bill seeking the establishment of State Police in Nigeria.
Bagos described the development as a significant step toward tackling the country’s growing security challenges and improving the protection of lives and property.
“This is a bold, timely, and patriotic step towards addressing the growing insecurity confronting our nation. For years, Nigerians have continued to suffer from violent attacks, banditry, kidnapping, terrorism, and other security challenges that require innovative and practical solutions.”
The former lawmaker said he has consistently advocated for State Police, even before his election into the National Assembly in 2019, because of its potential to strengthen security at the grassroots.
“I remain convinced that State Police will enhance intelligence gathering, improve response time, strengthen community policing, and provide a more effective framework for tackling insecurity at the grassroots level.”
Bagos acknowledged concerns about possible abuse of State Police but insisted that such fears should not stop Nigeria from implementing necessary security reforms.
“Rather, we should focus on building strong constitutional safeguards, accountability mechanisms, and institutional checks that will ensure the system serves the people and not political interests.”
He called on the 36 State Houses of Assembly to give the amendment urgent consideration, stressing that their support is crucial to completing the constitutional process.
Bagos further urged political leaders and stakeholders across the country to put national security above partisan interests and support the reform for the benefit of all Nigerians.
He added that the successful implementation of State Police would mark a major milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to build a safer, more secure, and more responsive security system.
