Iran has launched two intermediate-range ballistic missiles toward Diego Garcia, a strategically important United States–United Kingdom military base in the Indian Ocean, according to reports citing US officials.
The remote facility serves as a major hub for American military operations, including the deployment of long-range bombers and nuclear-powered submarines, making it a critical asset in global defence strategy.
US officials, quoted by The Wall Street Journal, said the missiles did not successfully hit the base.
One reportedly malfunctioned during flight, while the other was engaged by a US naval vessel using an SM-3 interceptor. It remains unclear whether the interception fully neutralised the threat.
The attempted strike signals a notable extension of Iran’s military reach, targeting a facility located about 2,500 miles from its territory.
Analysts say the development could indicate advancements in Tehran’s missile capabilities beyond previously assessed ranges.
