The Olatunji Disu has addressed circulating reports claiming that all police units and squads across the country have been disbanded, describing such reports as misleading.
In a statement released by Police Spokesperson Anthony Placid, IGP Disu explained that the directive pertains only to the reduction of tactical teams at various command levels, not a complete disbandment.
Under the new directive, tactical teams at zonal and state command levels are to be reduced to a maximum of five, while area command and divisional levels are limited to three. The move is intended to curb the proliferation of multiple teams, which has led to manpower shortages at police divisions and complaints about excessive force.
The statement clarified that the directive allows heads of formations to merge or disband teams at their discretion. It does not affect state government-created units such as Lagos’ Rapid Response Squad, Oyo’s SRS, or Bayelsa’s Operation DOO-AKPOR.
IGP Disu, described as a “grassroots officer with a profound network across Nigerian society,” emphasized that the reduction aims to strengthen supervision, enhance accountability, and create a more people-friendly police force, while freeing personnel for standard police stations.
“Having emphasized accountability and a people-friendly force in his maiden address to Nigerians, the IGP took this step to enhance supervision of existing teams, strengthen police divisions, and remove causes of complaints against the force by members of the public,” the statement concluded.
