Tension gripped Kassa community in Kassa District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Plateau State, as angry youths and women destroyed a military checkpoint following the burial of a resident reportedly killed by armed attackers.

The incident occurred on Monday at Rapung Kassa, where a large crowd stormed the military post and set ablaze structures and equipment used by troops stationed in the area.

Sources said the protest was triggered by the burial of Gyang Nuhu Choji, who was allegedly killed on April 16 by unidentified gunmen suspected to be Fulani bandits operating within the community.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the protesters, made up mostly of youths and women, expressed frustration over what they described as repeated attacks and inadequate protection despite the presence of security operatives.

The mob reportedly blocked major access roads during the protest, disrupting movement in and out of the community for several hours before the situation began to ease.

Calm was later restored after intervention by community leaders and security officials, who engaged with the protesters and assured them that measures would be taken to address their concerns.

Security sources confirmed that no casualties were recorded during the attack, although the checkpoint sustained significant damage.

Authorities also disclosed that patrols and monitoring activities have been intensified in the area to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
