The University of Jos (UNIJOS) has officially flagged off its awareness rally in preparation for the 27th edition of the Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA), set to take place in 2025. The event marks a historic milestone, as it will be the first time the NUGA Games are hosted in North Central Nigeria.
The lively rally, which began at the Hill Station Roundabout in Jos, drew a large turnout of students, staff, alumni, and dignitaries, all expressing enthusiasm and readiness for the upcoming games.
Speaking at the event, the Vice Chancellor of UNIJOS, Professor Tanko Ishaya, said the rally symbolized the official countdown to the much-anticipated NUGA Games. He reaffirmed the institution’s preparedness to host what he described as “the best NUGA ever.”
“We are here to tell the world that UNIJOS is ready. The students, staff, and the entire Plateau community are prepared to receive contingents from across the country. We promised Nigeria the best NUGA ever — and we are going to deliver it,” Prof. Ishaya declared.
He also reassured visitors that Jos is safe and welcoming, urging Nigerians to disregard negative perceptions about the city.
“As you can see, everyone is out, happy, and excited. Jos is safe, and we are ready to host the nation,” he added.
The Vice Chancellor expressed gratitude to the Federal Government, particularly President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his administration’s support in promoting sports and youth development. He noted that UNIJOS had been named one of the country’s ten National Centres of Excellence in Sports, adding that the university had introduced new programs such as Sports Science, Sports Medicine, and Exercise and Performance Studies to strengthen Nigeria’s sports ecosystem and its contribution to the economy.
Prof. Ishaya also appreciated the Plateau State Government, led by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, for its strong partnership and support toward the successful hosting of the games — including financial assistance and infrastructure upgrades to accommodate thousands of visitors.
“The state government has been very supportive because they understand that hosting over 10,000 visitors will greatly boost the local economy,” he said.
In his remarks, Gad Shamaki Peter, Global President of the UNIJOS Alumni Association, described sports as a powerful tool for unity and youth empowerment, noting that the 27th NUGA Games will not only highlight the strength of Nigerian youths but also help reshape the narrative of Plateau State through development and national visibility.
Similarly, Prof. Taye Obateru, Chairman of the NUGA Media and Publicity Sub-Committee, emphasized that the event offers an opportunity to showcase the peace, hospitality, and vibrant culture of Jos.
“UNIJOS is ready to impact society, nurture sports talent, and foster partnerships that will strengthen both sports and business in the state,” he noted.
With excitement mounting and preparations in full swing, the 27th NUGA Games at the University of Jos promise to be a historic celebration of sportsmanship, national unity, and youth excellence, positioning Plateau State as a hub of peace, hospitality, and sporting innovation in Nigeria.
